Have you ever been asked that question – what is your superpower? (Recently I learned that this has become a popular interview question!)
I was at a marketing conference about 10 years ago and that was the way the facilitator started our breakout session. “Please share with everyone, YOUR superpower.”
It was so interesting to see the reactions around the table.
The youngest people in the audience, new in their careers, were almost speechless, as they likely had never thought about this before.
For me – I immediately knew mine: Networking and connecting people.
I’ve found that if your chosen profession is aligned with your superpower, then you will have almost instant success. But if your chosen field is not aligned, then you may struggle for success (it will always feel like a lot of work).
Think about it. Your superpower is what you are really good at, in a way that feels natural to you. It may be something that comes so easily for you that it’s hard for you to see.
How can you discover your superpower?
- Look for what comes naturally for you.
- Ask people who know and like you to find out what they say is a unique talent of yours.
- Take a personality test or assessment to see where you excel.
- Talk with a career or life coach who understands how to discover your strengths.
Once you discover your superpower – what do you do next? Embrace it! Once I realized that networking and connecting people was my superpower, I became more comfortable attending events where I didn’t know anyone, as I realized I could put people at ease and would quickly find connections.
If your superpower is being able to analyze numbers and recognize insights and trends that no one can readily see, then a career in business analytics or insights may be for you. If you’re great at verbalizing content in a compelling way, then public speaking should be an important part of your life. If you don’t want a career as a professional speaker, then leverage your superpower by volunteering to give presentations to clients and vendors.
Discovering your superpower can be freeing. It can allow you to leverage your natural capabilities and it will give you energy!
Now, think about your superpower. Feel free to ask your friends, coworkers and family members what you are good at and then embrace it!
It may make you feel like “Superman/Superwoman”!
